Sellers and Yeatman describe in their publication “1066 and All That “of the medieval peasant caught poaching the King’s deer having his hands and feet chopped off, and was then permitted to flee the country. The real penalties were almost as dire but, even so, many poor men did poach deer and turn them into pottages, the ancestors of this recipe.
